Medical research to get R370m shot in the arm

Medical research in South Africa is to get a R370 million boost for the development of new medicines, vaccines and other technologies to fight against HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria.

"The future is bright for science in South Africa," said Dr Trevor Mundel from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation yesterday at a meeting with the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the University of Cape Town (UCT), which are to receive R180m from the foundation.

Ugandans have questioned the safety of their health facilities after a nurse was charged with attempting to inject her HIV infected blood into a newly born baby, the africareport.com says.

Early this month, Rosemary Namubiru, 64, was allegedly caught in the process of injecting a two-year-old baby by the infant's parent at a private clinic in Kampala.

Aids related deaths decline amid fall in new HIV infections

New HIV infections in South Africa have fallen by a third since 2004, according to a report handed to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on Friday.

Between 2004 and 2012, the number of new HIV infections fell from an estimated 540 000 to 370 000, the report by the JointUN Programme on HIV-Aids commonly known as UNAids showed.

Probe highlights risk from discharged TB patients

A long-term probe has found that South Africans with highly drug-resistant TB are "systematically" discharged from hospital without being cured, placing themselves and others at risk, its authors have said.

"Treatment failure and discharge of such patients into the wider community is occurring systematically on a country-wide level," a University of Cape Town professor of pulmonology who led the study, Keertan Dheda, said.
