Cutting from the same cloth: integrating MMC, TMC & initiation
In the run-up to ‘circumcision season’, this week’s Health Science Cafe will examine the complex dynamics of MMC, TMC and the broader initiation ritual, exploring the relationships between culture, medicine and health.
Specialists Dr Dirk Taljaard and Mtheto Tshemese will consider the potential for the incorporation of MMC into the initiation ritual, discussing the following:
• The integration of aspects of MMC into TMC
• The initiation ritual’s potential as a tool for empowerment
• The politics of MMC, TMC and initiation
• TMC in urban areas
• Examples of cooperation between stakeholders
The café features two 15 minute specialist talks, followed by a casual roundtable chat. Designed with your busy schedule in mind, our cafés offer you the opportunity to connect with an expert and get targeted information—all in the time it takes to grab a quick bite and something to drink (and those are on us!).
