HIV sets the stage for other players

Through showing that a high HIV prevalence is a back drop against which other dramas are played out, The New Age (TNA) have given us a good example of how HIV can, and should, be mainstreamed in the news media.

The article reports that a North West MEC met with Taung community members to discuss their loan shark woes.

The people of Taung said that loan sharks operating in the area were keeping residents poor and that poverty interacted with HIV-related issues, such as the high number of child headed households and teen pregnancy.

Poverty, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy are problems experienced by many societies. However HIV is a game changer, which interacts with and in some sense transforms other social ills, making them all the more serious.
