Cheers for safe sex

The Department of Health along with the Society for Family Health  , the SA Business Coalition on HIV-AIDS  and SA Breweries   are launching a programme which will see more than 845 million condoms distributed along with alcohol deliveries to tavern and shebeens, for the next five years.

As alcoholism in South Africa remains a major problem and has been identified as a key determinant in risky sex, targeting these MARPS (most at risk populations) is a growing concern in HIV prevention efforts.

In a press statement released by SA Breweries, the company says it hopes to aid in averting 1.6 million HIV infections. This is based on a Futures Institute study which showed that for every 500 condoms distributed, at least one new infection is averted.
