South Africa

According to the 2008 National antenatal sentinel HIV and Syphilis prevalence survey, the SA National Department of Health estimated that 5.3-million South Africans were HIV-positive by the end of 2008.

Using the Actuarial Society of South Africa's (ASSA) 2003 model, the Center for Actuarial Research produced the following projections in their 2006 report titled The demographic impact of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, National and Provincial Indicators for 2006:

  • Just over 5-million people in South Africa (11%) were HIV-positive in 2006
  • Of an approximate 700,000 total deaths in South Africa, 345,000 were AIDS-related in 2006
  • Without antiretroviral therapy, 505,000 people are predicted to die from AIDS-related cases in 2010. Factoring in the antiretroviral rollout, the number of AIDS deaths in 2010 could be dramatically reduced to around 291,000.
  • There will be an expected 1.6 million AIDS orphans in the year 2010.
  • About 711,000 people required AIDS treatment in 2006, but only 225,000 were receiving ART in the public sector.
  • It is expected by the year 2010 there will be an accumulative total of 3, 293 012 AIDS deaths, with a total of 291 000 in the year 2010 itself.
