More than 500 people, mostly women, marched on the Department of Health's offices in Joburg yesterday, demanding basic health services in their communities.
Volunteer HIV counsellors protest over unpaid stipends and broken promises. The New Age (TNA) has reported that the volunteers were promised permanent paid positions but that to date nothing has been done about this matter. Volunteers also complained that meager stipends remained outstanding for three months.
The New Age have chosen to highlight striking students’ demand for condoms among a list of other grievances that were laid before the management of Durban’s University of Technology (DUT) during protests that began last week.
This raises questions about the perceptions of government-issue condoms.
