IN THE NEWS: World TB Day helps fight the pandemic

World Tuberculosis Day will be commemorated by the City of Cape Town today when patients and staff will be honoured after a cure rate of 83% was achieved. The City will be issuing certificates to multidrug resistant TB patients who have completed their course of treatment today and will honour staff members and NGOs at a special ceremony tomorrow.

32 year knockout for risky behaviour

A man from the city of Cincinnati has been slapped with a 32 year prison sentence after failing to disclose his HIV status to numerous sexual partners as reported by The Star. According to Cincinnati and Ohio state law, failure to disclose ones status is a criminal offence as it puts the lives of sexual partners at risk.

Government unveils the latest NSP

Much of the post-World AIDS Day Media coverage was dedicated to the new National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs and media reports have focused on the main goals, key interventions and the whopping R130-billion budget laid out in the plan.

On World AIDS Day President Jacob Zuma unveiled the latest National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs 2012-2016 to a 5000 strong crowd at Wolfson stadium in Port Elizabeth.

ART, lies and videotape

It is estimated that over 300, 000 HIV-positive South Africans who could have lived long and healthy lives on ART, died from the effects of uncontrolled HIV infection, during the Mbeki-Manto HIV misinformation era.

The TAC’s campaign which fought and eventually won out against this menace is the subject of ‘TAC-Taking Haart’ a film reviewed in today’s Mail & Guardian by Shaun de Waal.
