Struggling to connect: Alcohol & HIV
9 November 2012
An article reporting on the results of the 2012 Tsantsabane Youth Survey, addresses both HIV and alcohol abuse but never draws a connection between the two.
According to the article, which appeared article in The New Age (TNA) on Wednesday (7 November 2012), alcohol abuse among youth in the area stands at 74 per cent.
Among other information gleaned from the survey is the good news that young people in the area are testing for HIV.
But the article doesn’t make the connection between alcohol abuse and HIV by explaining how alcohol abuse can in fact undermine the strides being made in addressing HIV.
Excessive alcohol consumption loosens inhibitions and makes it more likely that people will engage in unprotected sex.
In cases like these journalists should go beyond just reporting and relaying information to making connections between facts to provide greater insight.
