Plans to save Durban's embattled McCord Hospital got underway this week as both the hospital and the provincial department of health prepared to make compromises to save hundreds of jobs.
The hospital had informed its staff that it would be forced to close its doors at the end of March after indications were clear that the department - the largest funder of the more that century-old private hospital - was contemplating switching off its funding to put more focus and funds in needy public hospitals.
The hospital had previously been funded mainly by donor money and fees paid by patients, but lately it relied mainly on government for funding while retaining its independence...read the full article
