South Africa has recorded considerable declines in HIV infection rates since 2003

The United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS) has commended South Africa for reporting significant declines in new infections among adults and children.

The number of children newly infected with HIV fell by between 40 and 59 per cent from 2009 to 2011.
